Madhumeha (Diabetes)
Diabetes, a silent killer gives rise to a wide variety of health problems from blindness to kidney diseases to nerve damage. It is also called as “Lifestyle Disorder”.

In Ayurveda Diabetes is referred as “Madhumeha”. It is a Sanskrit term that literally means “Sweet urine disease”. It is a metabolic Kapha type of disorder. Due to unhealthy diet and sedentary lifestyle, Kapha dosha gets aggravated giving rise to Mandagni (low digestive fire). It leads to Vata and Pitta dosha imbalance and derangement in body tissues (Dhatu). Body tissue functioning gets affected and body is unable to make a proper use of glucose resulting in Hyperglycemia (High blood sugar) and Glycosuria (Sugar in urine)

Causes-
• Lack of Exercise & laziness
• Excessive sleep especially at day time
• Sedentary lifestyle
• Diet increasing Kapha Dosha- such as oily, deep fried food, yoghurt, sugar, fats, carbohydrates, sweets, chocolates, ice-creams, cold drinks, fast food, canned food , preservatives, alcohol,
• Stress
• Obesity
• Hereditary

Early signs/Symptoms –
• Frequent urination especially at night
• Turbid and excessive urination
• Excessive thirst, hunger & sweat
• Dryness of mouth, throat & palate
• Tingling/numbness in hands/feet
• Extreme fatigue & unexplained weight loss
• Giddiness, cramp in legs
• Late wound healing
• Itchiness all over the body
• Blurred vision

Management of diabetes-
Regular exercise, Weight management, stress management, Detoxification, and Diet regulation are key to diabetic management.

Diet-
Dont’s/ Avoid-
• Intake of Kaphaj diet ( Sweet, sour, salty taste food)
• Intake of heavy to digest food or heavy meals
• Carbohydrates like rice, oats, potatoes, bread, biscuits, baker items
• Sweets, cold drinks, chocolate, icecreams, jams,
• Oily & fried food, junk food, fast food
• Banana, Mango, Pineapple, Dates, Honey

Do’s-
• Increase intake of Kapha pacifying diet (Bitter, pungent, astringent taste food)
• Eat in small quantity & easy to digest food.
• Vegetables – Bitterguord, Drumstick, Methi, onions, Green leafy vegetables, Cabbage, Carrot, radish
• Fruits- Oranges, pear, pomegranate, apple, apricot
• Spices- Cumin seeds, ginger, garlic, Cinnamon, Fenugreek, Carrom seed

• Bael (Aegel Marmelon)
